Refrigeration Technologies Program Courses

The Refrigeration Technologies program at Tulsa Welding School provides a total of seven courses for students to be fully prepared to enter the professional world as skilled entry-level HVAC technicians.


Fundamentals of Electricity: This course will provide students with basic electrical understanding from an elemental stage all the way through trouble shooting. Trainers will teach test meter usage and schematic wiring as well as safety processes associated with handling electrical systems. Students will be able to work with commonly used dual voltage systems, and study single phase and three-phase motors to gain a basic understanding of electricity.

Fundamentals of Solar: This class will provide an overview of photovoltaic systems as well as an introduction to the fundamentals of solar energy. Students will learn the processes and concepts of photovoltaic systems, including their design and installation, by means of lectures, hands-on lab exercises, and problem solving.

Fundamentals of Refrigeration: This course will introduce students to refrigeration cycles through observation of operating equipment and class lectures. Students will learn the physical and mechanical properties of the refrigeration cycle and refrigerants, and will also be introduced to the many tools involved in refrigeration. Safety programs will also be provided.

Specific Systems

Comfort Systems- Residential: This course will provide experience with residential split systems, air conditioners, packaged heat pump systems, and evaporative coolers. Gas piping, sizing, and installation are also studied as it applies to furnace operation, and students will gain more hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical troubleshooting.

Comfort Systems- Commercial: This class will offer a more technical approach to studying concepts of indoor climate control. It will also allow students more hands-on interaction as they learn to remove and replace components safely in commercial and residential HVAC systems, use equipment to recover and charge refrigerants, and learn to use both refrigerant piping techniques and oxy/acetylene equipment. Upon successful completion of the course, students will also be able to earn a R410a safety certification and an EPA section 609 certification.

Refrigeration Systems & Practices: This class will enable students to learn how to maintain, manage, and monitor commercial-grade and residential freezers and walk-in refrigerators. They will get an in-depth look at low temperature refrigeration by studying commercial grade ice makers, and will study a variety of special tools related to HVAC equipment. They will also be required to repair and/or service critically charged systems and change out a compressor.

Advanced Training

Advanced Troubleshooting Techniques: This class will introduce the maintenance and operation of reciprocating liquid chillers. Students will also be exposed to the E-Star Trainer, equipment the RSI developed to teach and hone electrical troubleshooting skills. This class will raise students to the level of technician through the study of schematic wiring and mechanical troubleshooting, ensuring that they have gained the skills required to be a successful entry-level technician. Students are also given the opportunity to qualify for the EPA section 608 certification.
